Your Favorite Work Style Staple Just Got a Major Style Re-Boot for Spring

Shirting is having a moment this spring. But we're not talking about just any shirting: We're talking about next-level shirts that will amp up any look in the blink of an eye—for the office, date night, weekend, and beyond! While we love a clean white button-down for layering, can't get enough of a menswear stripe, and know the reliability of a button-down shape well, it's time to step out of the box and try something new.

A cotton button-down is always a classic. But this spring's mighty band of poplins are making a statement: They want to be noticed. Some twist and tie; others boast off-the shoulder silhouettes; still more mix-and-match materials for a style that's anything but ordinary. These new shirting shapes will give your look the extra oomph it needs as you transition your winter wardrobe to spring. For work, top a black skirt with a white shirt that ties, style an off-the-shoulder option with denim on the weekends, and go for a dramatic bell sleeve for a night out on the town. With this spring's take on the timeless shirting classic, you can't go wrong.

7 Things You Should Never Wear to Work in the Spring

admin
222

Winter's thaw is finally upon us. (Hey, if that's not a cause for celebration we don't know what is). But before you dive head-frirst into spring's phenomenal fashion trends—The cold shoulder! Slip dresses! Wedgie jeans!—know the rules of what's appropriate to wear to work and what should be worn solely for weekend and evening outings.

Follow these rules on what you should neverwear to work, and we guarantee you won't get called out by HR for improper office attire.

7 Things You Should Never Wear to Work in the Spring
1. Shoulder-Exposing Tops
From off-the-shoulder blouses, to one-shouldered tops, and even long-sleeved tops with single a shoulder cutout, this spring is all about the sexiness of a bare shoulder. But no matter how high the mercury climbs (or the fact that you're seeing other women commuting with bared shoulders, we've already seen some), just don't do it. It's way too much skin for work environment. Now, if you've got a date on the other hand, definitely show off those shoulders.

7 Things You Should Never Wear to Work in the Spring
2. Floor-Sweeping Maxi Dresses
Who doesn't love a maxi dress in the warmer months? They keep you cool and covered and yes, channel that inner festival child within you right there in your cubicle. The problem comes when the maxi falls past your ankles, grazing the floor. If you're going to wear a maxi to work, make sure it hits no longer than your ankles. Anything longer than that simply looks sloppy.

7 Things You Should Never Wear to Work in the Spring
3. Anything Sheer
Sheer illusion details are everywhere right now, from pullover tops with sheer sleeves, to skirts made of cotton lace with a sheer miniskirt slip underneath. While you may be covered up in the technical sense, it just reads as too naked for a work environment.

4. Cutouts
This may seem obvious, but avoid pieces with cutout slits in the midriff or arm areas (or anywhere else). Covered up clothes can still be sexy, but covered up pieces with flashes of skin ups the sex factor...a factor you do not want to exude on the job.

7 Things You Should Never Wear to Work in the Spring
5. Anything Your Need to Wear With a Special Bra
A good rule of thumb to play by is, that if you need a strapless, backless, one-shouldered or backless bra to wear your work outfit, you need to change.

6. Thong Sandals
Boy, has the flip-flop come a long way. Today, there are jeweled thong sandals, ones with lace-up ankle strap, heck—even high heeled thongs! No matter how fancy (or even how expensive) they might be, thongs sandals are inappropriate for the workplace.

7 Things You Should Never Wear to Work in the Spring
7. Clothing that Can Be Mistaken as Sleepwear
Slip dresses and pajama tops and pants are de rigueur for spring 2016—and they're going to be around next fall, too. But if you're office is on the conservative side, save them for date night or brunch on the weekend.

Head here to see what you you should be wearing to work this spring.

A Week’s Worth of Work Outfits to Get 2016 Off to a Chic Start

admin

The new year is going to be here before you know it and, armed with new resolutions and a refreshed post-holiday high, it will be time to head back to the office sooner than we may want to admit. The holidays have flown by and knowing that we will quickly have to enter the daily office grind (and that the weather is only going to continue to get colder) is not exactly a welcome notion. After all, wouldn't we all just rather be lying on a beach somewhere? A girl can dream...

In an effort to make the New Year transition just a little bit easier, we've got you covered with a week's worth of office outfit ideas to start 2016 off with your chicest (stiletto heeled) foot forward. Scroll through the below looks that we can't wait to start sporting this New Year!

Monday:
A Week's Worth of Work Outfits to Get 2016 Off to a Chic Start
Memorandum
Coming off the weekend, Monday is the day to choose a classic that will make you feel pulled-together with little effort. Choose a mid-length skirt and silk blouse, paired with pointy toe heels. If you're feeling extra bold at the start of the week, reach for a skirt in a bright color or pattern.

Tuesday:
A Week's Worth of Work Outfits to Get 2016 Off to a Chic Start
Camille Over the Rainbow
Weekday number two calls for something a little out of the box, but you are already feeling the grind of the office and want to be a bit more comfortable—it's time to pull out those tailored trousers. Choose a fun silhouette, like cropped flares, and pair them with a chic turtleneck sweater.

Wednesday:
A Week's Worth of Work Outfits to Get 2016 Off to a Chic Start
Damsel in Dior
You try to combat hump day by specifically not reaching for the jeans you're secretly dying to slip into. A dress it is! Go for an easy, shift silhouette, but make it feel more modern by layering a turtleneck and tights underneath. Finish it all off with oxford flats or loafers.

Thursday:
A Week's Worth of Work Outfits to Get 2016 Off to a Chic Start
Pink Peonies
With an almost-Friday burst of sartorial energy, it's time for a skirt-and-top pairing that will take you from the morning boardroom meeting to drinks afterwards with little fuss. Tuck a slim sweater into a skirt (length of your choosing!) and finish it off with heeled ankle booties for a youthful, yet sophisticated winter work look.

Friday:
A Week's Worth of Work Outfits to Get 2016 Off to a Chic Start
We the People Style
Ah Friday, the day we can finally let loose a little. It's time for those jeans you've been eyeing, but choose a pair of cropped black denim for a more sophisticated and dressed-up take on the wardrobe staple. To make your casual look a bit more office-friendly, tuck in a silk blouse and make sure to finish it off with a pair of classic pumps.

Here’s What an All-Grown-Up Rory Gilmore Should Wear on the New Gilmore Girls Reboot

admin

Good-girl twentysomethings freaked out a bit yesterday with news that Netflix was giving us a Gilmore Girls reboot, with four 90-minute episodes that the majority of the original cast are reportedly signed on for. While the rest of the details are still fairly minimal, it's reasonable to imagine that we'll be checking in with Lorelai and Rory now, circa 2015, and guys—Rory is going to be a full-fledged adult. Which means a grown-up closet that's ready for things like, oh, long days in an office.

To recap, the finale ended with Rory heading off to stump for Barack Obama, which probably meant she spent the next bit of time in a combo of jeans, hoodies, and simple office basics like neutral trousers and practical blazers. In all likelihood, she was probably rocking most of the same stuff from her Stars Hollow closet with a few special new pieces we bet Lorelai (or grandma Emily) bought as a special treat.

Here's What an All-Grown-Up Rory Gilmore Should Wear on the New Gilmore Girls Reboot

Suffice it to say, whether we meet Netflix's Rory when she's working as a major political reporter or she's busy being a young mom and trying to deal as a freelance writer (or something else entirely different), you could do a lot worse than to bet she's in subdued separates that are more classic than trendy or envelope-pushing.

Herewith, our thoughts on what Netflix costume designers are gathering up right this very second:

Here's What an All-Grown-Up Rory Gilmore Should Wear on the New Gilmore Girls Reboot
1. Smart Turtlenecks
We imagine Rory as being an early adopter of the now trendy turtleneck. In fact, to be frank, she probably has had one in her closet since she was in elementary school. It's sophisticated and chic enough to work at the office while also adding an extra bit of warmth. Brilliant.

2. Cropped Trousers
And you know adult Rory is a J.Crew loyalist, with plenty of the brand's preppy classics on rotation. From tip to toe, we can see Stars Hollow's most-likely-to-succeed in these cropped pants, simple blouse, and statement coat.

Here's What an All-Grown-Up Rory Gilmore Should Wear on the New Gilmore Girls Reboot
3. Designer Collaborations
Plus, something tells us that Rory will be too careful with her budget to splurge on big-ticket designer items. As such, we envision her as a savvy shopper of all collaborations. She probably wouldn't queue up for Balmain x H&M, but Boden's preppy Brit-inspired pieces? They have her name all over 'em.

Psst—the majority of the cast reunited over the summer and spilled on where they think their characters would be now.

How to Make Fall 2015 Runway Trends Work in a Corporate Office Environment

admin

Even though we've already broken down runway trends into what's really wearable, it's time we take things a step further. Fall 2015 had lots of looks that might be easy enough to translate to date night or hanging with friends on the weekend, but for your super buttoned-up, tailoring-required office? It's trickier, but far from impossible. We called up Rent the Runway CEO and cofounder Jennifer Hyman, a Harvard Business School grad whose career has taken her through the corporatized halls of Starwood Hotels and Resorts and IMG, to see what advice she had to offer on merging fashion trends with a work wardrobe that has to remain super professional.

Play with color.
Even in today's most office'y offices, there's no rule that says you have to wear black or navy. "Look at Michelle Obama or Hilary Clinton and how their styles have evolved. Women in power are wearing lots of color," Hyman commented to us. She loves burgundy and emerald done in professional cuts like pencil skirts and sheath dresses and is supported by the pros: Pantone's official color of 2015 is wine-red marsala. Another runway hue trend that's easy to make work for work? All-white or cream, massive in the fall collections and easy to replicate in the pieces you typically see worn by employees in your company. To try, pick up slacks, a blazer, or fine-knit sweater in an eggshell color.

If you're going to do a print, keep the dominant color dark.
There's a huge catalog of print out there, and it goes without saying that some will be too loud or inappropriate for serious work environments (the robots and monsters fashion loved in the spring probably aren't a good idea for a board meeting). The good news is that one of the season's most major print trends—dark, moody florals—is on the opposite end of anything that could read as juvenile. To wear, shop for a large-scale print with a dark dominant color in dresses or sharp tops. The bigger the print, the less busy it'll read.

Shop separates and include one trendy piece.
"Over the past 15 to 20 years office attire has loosened up, and even in the most conservative industries the Working Girl dress code is officially dead," said Hyman. "The traditional black or navy business suit has been replaced by sophisticated dress silhouettes and separates that allow you to showcase more of your personal style." So? Keep your trusty black trousers and replace the basic button-up with a shirt that has a ruffled collar or skinny tie at the neck. The '70s were massive for fall and in lieu of attempting a total look, shop for a pussy bow blouse or something with a subtle amount of sheen.

Wear something other than pumps.
Shake yourself out of a rut where you pull on the same simple pair of black or nude heels every day. Crazy lace-up stilettos or multimedia shoes might be way too much for your work space, but you can totally play with the season's trendy menswear-inspired flats and brogues.

7 Classic Blair Waldorf Outfits You’ll Want to Try Every Day This Week

Dressing for work can often feel like the world's greatest struggle. The idea of forcing ourselves out of our cozy pajamas and into a work appropriate outfit can make a grown woman shed a tear or two. When faced with mornings like these, you can either settle for soft pants, comfy knits, and flats (totally OK) or you can choose step it up (hey, you've got some serious fashion prowess—use it!). Need some style inspiration? Look no further than our fave TV bad-girl-gone-good, Gossip Girl's Blair Waldorf . With her every posh outfit, Miss Waldorf shows us all up (she was dressing for high-school for the majority of the show after all!) and offers a bevy of ideas for office outfits. So take a page out of the B handbook this week for the days you're feeling a little more inspired to turn up your style at the office. And while Blair's outfits may seem (and actually be) over-the-top expensive, chances are you have more a few Blair-approved essentials hiding in in plain sight (think: classic tailored trousers, flirty A-line skirts and bright silk self-tie blouses). So, go ahead and give these seven outfit combinations a whirl this week. You're bound to be spotted. XOXO

1. A Tailored Pantsuit
7 Classic Blair Waldorf Outfits You'll Want to Try Every Day This Week
This simple donegal pantsuit has just enough detail on the trims to create a strong look when paired with a vibrant top (Hi, Chuck!)

2. A Shimmery Top and an A-Line Skirt
7 Classic Blair Waldorf Outfits You'll Want to Try Every Day This Week
Blair was all about mixing patterns and textures to add flair to her outfits, and we love how she makes this evening top work for day with a classic skirt.

3. A Skirt Suit
7 Classic Blair Waldorf Outfits You'll Want to Try Every Day This Week
It doesn't get much chicer than this forest green tweed skirt and jacket combo. We're obsessed with every detail and especially love the pop of color from Blair's red notebook. She certainly makes a case for dressing up at the office.

4. A Bright Coat
7 Classic Blair Waldorf Outfits You'll Want to Try Every Day This Week
This red coat is everything and more, and we love how easy it is to throw a bright coat over to spice up any outfit.

5. A Leopard-Print Dress
7 Classic Blair Waldorf Outfits You'll Want to Try Every Day This Week
Only Blair could make a leopard print dress work-friendly. But in a micro print, this leopard look is actually neutral, with just a hint of edge. This mini-dress, however, might be a little short for the workplace, so we'd recommend throwing on a pair of tights underneath just to be safe! And forgive the flip-flops, Leighton was photographed between takes.

6. A Dramatic Cape
7 Classic Blair Waldorf Outfits You'll Want to Try Every Day This Week
Blair is the queen of pops of color, and we love this forest green cape paired with mustard self-tie blouse. Though in real life, we could probably pass on the hat.

7. A Belted Floral Dress
7 Classic Blair Waldorf Outfits You'll Want to Try Every Day This Week
Belting your printed dress is a great way to add some curves. Plus, the wintry accessories, make this floral look just right for colder weather.
