Demi Lovato, Taylor, Swift, and Selena Gomez Nail Spring’s Biggest Trend at iHeart Radio Awards

Conjure the words "red carpet," and your first (albeit stylish) thought would be of drop-dead gorgeous dresses. Not tonight.

Music's biggest stars bucked the traditional red carpet attire for one of spring's most major fashion trends: dressy pants. The likes of Demi Lovato, Taylor Swift, Zendaya, and Selena Gomez ditched flirty dresses for powerful, bold trousers at the iHeart Radio music Awards. And yes, each of them wore the trend like the bosses they are. Lovato went for an updated version of the '80s power suit in a black-and-white jumpsuit with built-up shoulders. Swift channeled Cat Woman in a skin-tight turtleneck jumpsuit coated in jet black bugle beads. Gomez went all out in a tangerine look with slash cutouts at the midriff. And then there was Zendaya, who slayed in a red crushed-velvet pantsuit over a black bralette—like we said, slayed. See how each of the stars pulled off the looks in their own way right here:

Zendaya, Selena Gomez, Alicia Vikander and More at the Fall 2016 Louis Vuitton Show

This morning, Louis Vuitton showed its fall/winter 2016 collection in Paris-and while we’re dying over the clothes (hello, fur trenches and chunky sneaker heels!), our eyes shot straight to the star-paved front row. Amongst the brand’s usual suspects were designer Nicholas Ghesquiere’s personal muse Selena Gomez, actress Jennifer Connelly, supermodels Karlie Kloss and Liu Wen, and perennial LV faves Lea Seydoux and Adele Exarchopoulos.

Newbies to the show included current muse and recent Oscar winner Alicia Vikander, gender-bending face of the brand’s spring women’s wear campaign Jaden Smith (alas, not donning a miniskirt), and Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner. Major props go to Zendaya, who came to slay in a sleeveless sheath dress bearing the French house’s famous monogram from the previous collection, proving that when the celebs sitting front and center actually rock the clothes the way they should, it’s a win-win.

Nooo! These Celebrities Are Breaking a Major Rule About How to Wear Leggings

admin

We're seriously considering dialing up the fashion police because three style offenders just landed on our radar! Leggings, the super-comfy staple that the athleisure movement rides on, are fantastic to wear but definitely come with some a few dos and don'ts for how to wear them (i.e., we think they can count as pants, so long as you don't commit any of the cardinal sins). The skin-tight fabric means you're better off reaching for dark or bright shades instead of anything that's light-colored or could be read as skin-tone.

It's the last point that seems to have escaped the attention of some of our favorite style stars, something first noticed by our friends at People Style.

For a spot of shopping, Alessandra Ambrosio picked a cozy turtleneck sweater, gray boots, and putty-colored leather leggings. While she did follow the dictum that all shirts should cover your bum when wearing leggings, we're still not feeling the beige neutral. Contrast it against the hand she's holding near her bag—way too similar! (Though that bag-stance does say something about her personality...)

Miranda Kerr dressed for a flight earlier this month in a crop top, bomber jacket, and ankle boots, replacing skinny jeans with tan high-waisted leggings. The woman looks good, but the light brown hue is way too close in color to the expanse of tummy she's flashing (it should never be that hard to tell where pants end and skin begins).

Nooo! These Celebrities Are Breaking a Major Rule About How to Wear Leggings

Rounding out the trio of offenders is Selena Gomez. The singer picked a high-shine leather pair and an optic-white sweater to wear before performing at this year's Victoria's Secret Show. Love the silhouette, don't love how closely the pants resemble a color of foundation we might find in her makeup bag.

So...thoughts? It's rare that we suggest a blanket rule against a certain piece or shade, but when anything as figure-hugging as leggings is done in a color that approaches skintone, it becomes way too easy to step into "don't" territory. All three of the above women look gorgeous and know how to put an outfit together, but squint your eyes lightly and then glance back over their pictures. Doesn't it feel way too easy to imagine that they stepped out and—whoops—forgot to pull on pants?

The whole nude legging debate actually bubbles up something we covered last year. Remember the one winter outfit you should never, ever wear?
