Exactly How to Wear Denim Cutoffs, According to Country Singer Jana Kramer

admin
247

Come spring and summer, it's cutoff time. The relaxed denim shorts are a warm-weather staple that we're crazy about, but there are some guidelines about how to wear them. There's the obvious (please, keep your butt cheeks to yourself), but what about the finer sartorial points? Sandals or heels? The best hemline? For clarification, we turned to a woman who'd know: country singer Jana Kramer. Whether she'll wear cutoffs when she performs at the Academy of Country Music's Party for a Cause Festival in Las Vegas this weekend is anyone's guess, but rest assured that if she does pull a pair out, she's gonna be wearing them perfectly.

Exactly How to Wear Denim Cutoffs, According to Country Singer Jana Kramer

Rule 1: The right length is somewhere in between...
"Remember that rule about your shorts being a certain length for school?" she asked, instantly causing us to drop our hands to the side and decipher where fingertip-length was. "Well, maybe just a tad bit shorter than that. It's the perfect in-between."

Rule 2: A loose shirt is the go-to.
For Kramer—5'4 and the proud mama of a brand-new little boy—styling shorts with a voluminous top is what works best. "Let's just be honest. With my height and having just had a baby, I'm all about a loose, stylish t-shirt," she said. "It totally depends on you, though. I think crop tops look adorable with short cutoffs if you're tall like Kendall Jenner."

Rule 3: They work (almost) anywhere, so long as your accessories are on point.
Per Kramer, cutoffs can work from sunrise to sunset. The one caveat is that they need to be accessorized properly, so no heading out to dinner in a torn pair with a faded t-shirt and sandals. "Wear heels and a cute blazer for going out at night," she suggested. For a daytime look that still needs to be pulled together, consider lace-up sandals and an off-the-shoulder top (two of the biggest spring trends according to Pinterest data).

Rule 4: Any type of shoe works.
We begged Kramer to spill the beans on which shoes she'd never, ever wear with cutoffs, but her answer was a pretty firm anything goes situation. "I love flip flops and would prefer them over heels, but heels make your legs look amazing when you're wearing shorts." Wear what feels right for you, but consider the situation and place (refer back to rule #3).

While you can totally DIY your own pair, Kramer says it's not for her. "I tried to do a pair back in high school, and it was a disaster. I'm sticking to my day job," she said, naming Paige and J Brand as her preferred pairs. "They always fit my body type the best."

More? Let three cute country singers explain why guys love women in jeans and a t-shirt so much.

The Kendall Jenner Guide to Wearing Your Denim Miniskirt From College

With all kinds of spring style right around the corner, now's the time to start thinking about the outfits you'll be living in and what you might want to pull out of the far reaches of your closet. You're sure to be digging for the usual (bikinis, cutoffs, and breezy sundresses included), but Kendall Jenner would like you to reconsider something else this year. The model ended last summer in something we thought we might never see again—a cutoff denim miniskirt—and we're fully expecting her to bring it out again because, against all odds, the piece somehow looked covetable on her. Amazed, we studied her looks to figure out what specific elements make it work.

The Kendall Jenner Guide to Wearing Your Denim Miniskirt From College

Kendall's tricks for keeping it 2016, not 2006, is all about a basic top and shoes that offer more polish than the flip flops you were probably wearing 10 years ago. Consider the piece a skinny jean alternative and try on with a favorite tee or sleek tank à la Kendall. Most importantly, rethink whatever shoes you were wearing with the skirt back in the day. Where the Hollister and Abercrombie ads from the last decade would've shown the staple surf'ed out with rubber sandals, the denim mini of today needs to be worn with cool-girl ankle boots.

Got it? Should you have already tossed your "vintage" piece in an epic bout of closet cleaning, get one like Kendall's. Hers is from Aussie brand One Teaspoon.

When it comes to fitness today, everyone it seems, is intent on getting a perfectly pert butt. (We've all be down the #Khlofit rabbit hole on Instagram, haven't we?) Now, fashion designers are taking the rear-end obsession to stylish new heights with a denim trend that, yes, is all about the derriere.

Perhaps You Didn't See This Denim Trend Coming, But You Can Certainly Watch it Leave
Style star, Pernille Teisbaek in Vetements jeans

The newest spring denim trend features embellishments on the seat, which bring attention to your posterior. It all began last season when the super-cool French label, Vetements, featured a pair of relaxed-leg jeans made of two different pairs sewn together. The back of the denims (which amazingly, take six hours to produce by hand) feature a cut-and-sewn seat that brings the sexy back to the mom-jean look. The Vetements pieces became an instant hit with the street-style set, on influencers like Pernille Teisbaek and Irina Lakicevic and now, designers such as Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang are jumping on board in new and interesting ways. Only yesterday, Kendall Jenner Instagrammed her striped Marc Jacobs flares with a star seam on the butt (an image that'll surely be seared into the pop culture lexicon). Alexander Wang, on the other hand, is offering custom embroidery on the jeans his fall 2016 collection, with phrases, such as “$UCK IT” or “TOP BITCH.”

Alexander Wang is offering complimentary custom embroidery on Denim x Alexander Wang with sayings such as “$UCK IT” or “TOP BITCH” at the brand’s flagships in New York and London. Here is a denim look on the fall 2016 runway.

This trend is definitely going strong, with Levi's new Wedgie style taking off, but we have to say, we've never seen behinds that are quite this edgy.

The Perfect Pair of Black Jeans, According to Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

A good pair of black jeans is a wardrobe essential and a chameleon at that, easily moving from lived-in weekend staple to anchoring an outfit that's ready for drinks and dinner. Finding a go-to style can be a search on par with hunting for the holy grail, but if you're still looking for the perfect pair, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley might be able to help.

"A black pair of skinny jeans has to be the most versatile, timeless and flattering for everyone. I love that [they] can be dressed up or down, smart or casual," she told British Vogue, naming her favorite style as Paige's Hoxton in Black Shadow (to note: RHW is the brand's face and current campaign star). "They're very slimming and elongating."

The Perfect Pair of Black Jeans, According to Supermodel Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

The super listed her denim no-nos as anything "overly distressed or the paint-splattered trend" and noted that when she does a looser boyfriend fit, she likes to feel feminine. Based on a chat we had with her in the fall, we're guessing that means pulling on a classic pair of pumps, though she was firm that there's absolutely no point in worrying about what guys think of your jeans—it "should be the least of any woman's concerns."

You’ll Never Believe What This Ballerina Can Do Wearing a Pair of Jeans

The chic, direct-to-consumer brand AYR is already known for its super soft stretch jeans. But when Design Director Jac Cameron discovered a brand-new Lycra-infused denim weave that has 80 percent stretch recovery (most stretch denim has 30 percent stretch)—so your skinnies don't get unflatteringly baggy—she was bent on showing the world just what that unheard of level of elastic can do.

And so, AYR partnered with modelFIT, New York's go-to gym for models such as Karlie Kloss and Irina Shayk and those seeking ballet-dancer bods, to test out the Tech Flex jeans—and the results are pretty incredible.

Ballerina Suzanne Diaz took spin in the jeans—and it must be said, these babies are pretty much bullet proof.

"I love seeing advancements in denim fabrics," said Cameron. "So when I saw this incredible ISKO fabric in Barcelona, I ordered 15 yards right there. It's the most comfortable fabric I've ever had on my body."

Ballerina Suzanne Diaz dances in AYR's Flex Tech jeans, $225 at AYR.com.

The jeans themselves are zip-up, without traditional five-pocket details, you'll have total smoothness under fine knits and blouses. They come at an ankle length and have cute little zippers at the hems. Plus, they're machine washable like your regular jeans. And then there is the non-baggy aspect due to the recovery technology in the fabric. While they're not specifically meant for recreational wear, if you were, say, really in a rush on your way to spin class, there's an added bonus. "You can work out in them if you want to!," adds Cameron.

How Classic Jeans Stole the Spotlight from Mega-Ballgowns at the Couture Shows

How Classic Jeans Stole the Spotlight from Mega-Ballgowns at the Couture Shows
Miroslava Duma

Some of our favorite style news to come out of the couture shows this week wasn't necessarily the full-blown ballgowns (which were exquisite!) or even the first Paris showing of of Guo Pei, the designer of Rihanna's infamous yellow Met Gala cape. A major headline out of Paris this week is denim.

That's right, classic, American-style jeans.

Miroslava Duma, Vika Gazinskaya and Vogue UK editor, Sarah Harris, and others eschewed more dressed-up ready-to-wear looks for the most casual piece of all. Seeing as attending the couture shows is the perfect reason to wear your absolute fanciest things (hey, this is Paris, where they serve caviar atop baked potatoes), it's telling that the style set opted for jeans—especially a roomy straight-leg with some give at the bottom, in washes ranging from true indigo to a weathered gray-blue.

While jeans are synonymous with American fashion and hey, even American history (Levi Strauss invented them in San Francisco in 1837 to give miners and workers a durable pair of pants to work and move in during the Gold Rush), it's a little known fact that the first denim-like fabric actually came from the homeland of couture. The word denim, comes from a cotton twill fabric, “Serge de Nîmes”, originally made in Nîmes, France. How's that for coming full circle? Now check out how they're wearing jeans in Paris.

The Jeans that Flatter Your Body Type, According to Denim Doctor Diane Gilman

In certain circles, Diane Gilman is known as Queen of Jeans. We at Glamour, however have taken to calling her the Denim Doctor.

Why? Because in the decade since she’s been denim industry, the brunette bombshell has sold more than 8 million pairs of jeans. Not to mention that her eponymous denim collection for HSN, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, has the biggest loyal customer following of any other category on the TV shopping channel, clocking in at a staggering 850,000 denim-loving ladies.

So yeah, that kind of makes you the Queen of Jeans, right? (No word on whether a crown and scepter is included with this royal title).

“It’s a marriage of entertainment and infomercial, " says Gilman, pictured below. "Your customers need to identify with you as a friend. That’s a big responsibility! No matter how you feel, you have to be that best friend talking through why they need these jeans.”

The Jeans that Flatter Your Body Type, According to Denim Doctor Diane Gilman

She recently expanded her business into Paris and has plans to move into Dusseldorf in 2016. (And she jokes that if there were a way to clone her, they’d also take Beijing.) Gilman credits the boom to the quality of her fabrics.
“It’s all about mixing comfort with style. We’re into fabrics that stretch up to 20-inche,” she says. “You’re in something you can wear 24/7—why would you ever get into something stiff and uncomfortable again?!

So of course, when we had the opportunity to sit down with Gilman, to spill our denim dilemmas, jumped at the chance. Here, the Denim Doctor “prescribed” the perfect jeans to seven Glamour staffers with different body types. Find your perfect pair here, doctor's orders!

Editor: Jenae Holloway, Special Projects
Denim dilemma: Very tall with long legs, full hips, and loves a skinny but the waists always gape.
Diane Gilman's prescription: A comfort waist, which doesn’t have a classic waistband. Instead, it has a 3-and-a-half inch panel in denim that hugs the tummy, to avoid gaping.
Wearing: SuperStretch Skinny Jean with Mesh Shaping Panel in Tall sizing

Editor: Victoria Ravest, Deputy Art Director
Denim dilemma: A trouser lover who wants to be able to wear jeans to work.
Diane Gilman's prescription: A modern bootcut in ForeverBlack, which lasts 50 washes before you see any wear to the color and surface. It also doesn’t wrinkle, so you can sit at your desk all day and still look sharp.
Wearing: Forever Black Stretch Denim Boot-Cut

Editor: Lauren Chan, Associate Fashion Writer
Denim dilemma: Loves black, wants something other than a skinny, has a less than ample backside.
Diane Gilman's prescription: A slight flare with strategically placed pockets. DG2's uses small pockets and places them high on the jean. Plus, they're tilted inward so that the eye travels in and up creating curve.
Wearing: SuperStretch Denim Slim Flare
The Jeans that Flatter Your Body Type, According to Denim Doctor Diane Gilman

Editor: Eillie Anzilotti, Editorial Assistant
Denim dilemma: Has slim hips and strong calves from dancing, doesn't like skinny jeans—and can pull off any trend.
Diane Gilman's prescription: Also a slim flare, but in a nautical white. The style has contoured waistbands that are cut on the bias for extra stretch—which will help it hug slim hips. To accommodate for bigger calves, it hugs to the knee and then flares out.
Wearing: Lyric Culture by Diane Gilman SuperStretch Bell-Bottom
The Jeans that Flatter Your Body Type, According to Denim Doctor Diane Gilman

Editor: Amanda Jean Black, Fashion Assistant
Denim dilemma: Wants to avoid fabric wear and tear from chafing, is petite in height, and likes high-rise and wide-leg.
Diane Gilman's prescription: Jeans shaped like the plus wide-leg trouser, which wouldn’t cause that friction. The stretch will hold the wearer in and the fabric is cut to hold your inner thighs apart.
Wearing: Classic Denim Wide-Leg Trouser in Petite sizing
The Jeans that Flatter Your Body Type, According to Denim Doctor Diane Gilman

Editor: Sarah Evans, Designer
Denim dilemma: Loves skinnies and has thinner legs with a wider waist.
Diane Gilman's prescription: Skinnies that have waists with 6 inches of stretch, which solve this classic issue by molding to your legs and stretching at the hip. Our flex stretch is ideal!
Wearing: Modern SuperStretch Denim Skinny
The Jeans that Flatter Your Body Type, According to Denim Doctor Diane Gilman

Editor: Brittany Adams, Fashion Writer
Denim dilemma:
Also loves a skinny—but in classic black—and favors a high waist.
Diane Gilman's prescription: A ForeverBlack skinny or flat waisted jeggings with FlexStretch. The latter look exactly like a traditional jean, but slip on and has hidden elastic on the inside.

Don't see your own denim woes reflected in the mix? We asked Gilman what denim everyone needs in their closet this season. "I love the flare," she says. "From a business perspective, we've shown the skinny for so long that denim sales across the board have slumped in retail. But everyone needs more than one style: a modern boot cut, a skinny, and a flare. Or a few hundred!"
